Is your smile the best it can be? Regular daily care, coupled with yearly dental visits and a healthy, balanced diet will go a long way to giving you the smile you have always wanted. For good dental health, you should eat a variety of foods, and minimize those high in sugars and starches. These foods produce the most acids in the mouth and the longer they stay in the mouth, the more they can damage the teeth. These include:
-Candies, cookies, cakes, and pies.
-Crackers, breadsticks, and chips.
-Dried fruits and raisins.
-Calcium: found in milk, cheese, yogurt, broccoli, and kale.
-Phosphorous: found in a variety of foods, especially those high in protein like meat and milk, and cereals.
-Vitamin D: found in oily fish like salmon and tuna, but also added to milk and other foods.
-Protein: animal-based foods have all of the necessary amino acids, while much of the plant-based protein sources are are lacking one or more of the essential amino acids required for good health. You can find protein in lean red meat, fish and poultry, cheese, milk and yogurt, quinoa and soy products, and vegetables.
In addition to brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily, you will want to visit your dentist at least once every six months. Healthy teeth and gums require daily care supplemented with regular check-ups and professional cleanings.
